Mrs Margaret Ward Stone, 98ORANGE - Margaret (Ward) Stone, 98, of 54 Ball St., an active church member, died Friday in Quabbin Valley Healthcare Center, Athol, after an illness.
Her husband, Donald H. Stone, died in 1969. She leaves a son, Richard C. Stone of Orange; a daughter, Diane Brodeur of Oxford; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was born in North Orange, daughter of Everett D. and Cora (Harding) Ward, and graduated from Orange High School in 1919.
Mrs. Stone worked several years at Minute Tapioca Co. and had also been a bookkeeper at Chamberlain's Hardware.
She was a lifelong member of First Universalist Church and served as chairman of the church fairs for many years. She later organized La Petite flower shows at the church and made quilts and braided rugs for various church projects. Past president of the Orange Women's Club, she was instrumental in forming its Garden Club division and was inducted into the Clara Barton Sisterhood of the Universalist-Unitarian Women's Federation in 1979.
An accomplished pianist and organist, she was the organist at the Community Church of North Orange and Tully for several years. She was also an avid gardener and was well known in the area for her rock gardens.
A private graveside service will be in South Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Universalist Church, Building Fund, 31 North Main St., Orange, MA 01364; or to First Congregational Church, Memorial Fund, 355 Main St., Oxford, MA 01540. Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., is directing arrangements.
