    • Obituary: 10 Jun 1918; "Captain J. D. Hatfield is Dead at Neligh ? Prominent in Nebraska Business and Political Circles for Many Years ? Was One of Famous Band That Tunneled Out of Libby Prison. Captain John D. Hatfield died at his home in this city [Neligh] this afternoon [Sunday, June 9] of an illness of short duration. He was one of the oldest residents and highly respected citizens of Neligh and Antelope County, and during his lifetime was a large land owner. Mr. Hatfield was born July 4, 1834, near Rockville, Indiana. In 1861, he enlisted in the civil war and took part in the engagements at Shiloh, siege of Corinth, Hatchie Bridge, siege of Vicksburg, Jackson, siege of Atlanta and was with Sherman on the famous march to the sea. He was sent to Libby prison with 108 of his comrades and escaped February 9, 1861, by digging a tunnel. After six days and nights of privation, he succeeded in reaching the Union lines at Williamsburgh. He received the commission of Captain, December 28, 1864, and his honorable discharge July 29, 1865. Mr. Hatfield has been a resident of Neligh since 1885, served the county as treasurer and was among the first to call for an independent convention of the county in 1889. He was a delegate to the national convention in Omaha in 1892 and a delegate to the first national conference of the labor organizations of America at St. Louis in May, 1889, and also to the conference at Cincinnati in May, 1891.
