Barnes, Jr., 82, of West Street, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 7, 2010 at home surrounded by his loving family following a long illness. Bumps was born May 20, 1928 in Petersham. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Ethel "Dolly" (Keddy) Barnes; his children: Karen and her husband, Michael Lachance, Robert and his wife, Clare Barnes, Ben Barnes and Lorrie and her husband, Michael Bernard; grandchildren: Dan Gilmore, Jen Gilmore, Julie Surprenant, Jill Poulin, Theresa Barnes, Christopher Bernard, Brian Bernard, James Lachance and a great-granddaughter, Ellie Leann Poulin. He also leaves a brother, Arlan Barnes; sisters, Janet Parnes and Barbara Donahue. A sister, Constance Peters, predeceased him. Bumps was born and raised in Petersham, son of the late Bernard H. and Anna (Dugan) Barnes, Sr. He attended the Petersham Elementary School and graduated from the Petersham High School. Bumps lived in Petersham his entire life. Bumps was a US Navy Veteran of WW II, stationed aboard the USS Manchester from 1948 to 1950. He worked his whole life as a proud farmer until retiring in 1990. At Bernard's request, calling hours and funeral will not be held. There will be a family graveside service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Athol Memorial Hospital Oncology program, 2033 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331. Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol is in charge of arrangements
