    • Obituary: 12 Jun 2022; ORANGE - Sally M. (Dike) Ballou, 90, of Orange, died Friday, June 10, 2022 in Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, Massachusetts. She was born in Gardner, Massachusetts on October 19, 1931, the daughter of Garold and Gladys (Johnson) Dike. Sally grew up in Orange and graduated from Orange High School in 1949. She attended Salter Secretarial School in Worcester and worked for the Orange National Bank as secretary to the president. She returned to banking after raising her children, retiring in 1991 from Shawmut Bank. She married Richard Ballou in 1960, and they built the home they love on Warwick Road in West Orange. She was a member of the Orange High School Alumni Association, serving terms as president and treasurer; the Orange Scholarship Foundation, serving terms as treasurer and trustee, and a member of the Orange Historical Society. She was a skilled baker, seamstress, and balancer of checkbooks. She was a friend of the New Salem Central Congregational Church. She leaves her husband of 61 years, Richard C. Ballou, a son, Craig C. Ballou and his wife Caralyn of Northfield, MA; a daughter, Catherine A. Mealey and her husband John of Lynnfield, MA; four grandchildren, Liam Mealey, Grace Mealey, Elizabeth Ballou, and Eric Ballou. She was predeceased by her brother, James E. Dike. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, June 16th, at the New Salem Central Congregational Church, 24 South Main Street, New Salem. Burial will follow in Warwick Cemetery, Warwick.     From the Athol Daily News, 6 June 1952, "Cecil Stiles Ballou, 55, owner of the dairy farm and registered Gurnsey herd at 383 East River St. Orange, was burned to death in a flash fire in his barn yesterday afternoon. Ballou was pitching hay from a loft to a tractor-powered bailer on the barn floor, which was being operated by his son, Derrill. The hay toppled over, hurling Ballou onto the bailer and burying him under an estimated 2 tons of hay, which burst into flames from the exhaust and gasoline of the machine."
