    • Obituary: 6 Jan 2017; MARSHFIELD - Phyllis P. Bragg, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at Proprietor's Green in Marshfield, her home for the past few years, with loved ones close by. Born in Caribou, Maine, in 1925, she was the daughter of Celia and Frank Pendleton. Phyllis graduated from Caribou High School as valedictorian and served as a civilian volunteer during World War II. She graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in Spanish, with the honors of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and All Maine Women. While at the University of Maine, she was introduced to John H. Bragg by a mutual friend. They were married in 1947, following John's return from Japan after World War II. The Braggs made their first home together in married student housing at UMaine, and Phyllis completed a master's degree in Spanish in 1949. The couple settled in Melrose, where they started their family. In 1955, Phyllis and John moved to Amherst, where John was hired to teach at the University of Massachusetts. Amherst became her home for over 50 years, with temporary relocations to Indiana, and to Ibadan, Nigeria, supporting her husband's career as a professor of agricultural economics. Phyllis was an accomplished musician, working part time as a church organist and piano accompanist for voice lessons, while raising their five children. Phyllis's life took an unexpected turn with her husband's sudden death in 1972. She moved forward with strength and generosity, starting the first widows' support group in Amherst, to connect women facing similar challenges who could help each other access needed resources. She was brave and adventurous, traveling throughout her life not only to Africa, but also to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Australia and New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, and throughout the U.S., sometimes with family or friends, and sometimes as a student with the Elder Hostel program. She was an avid and informed birdwatcher, reader, knitter, bridge player, and creator of "Grammie Jammies" for her many grandchildren. Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of 25 years John H. Bragg, her sister Helen P. Kenney and brother Frank Pendleton. She is survived by her five children, Barbara "Bonnie" Johnson and her husband Sanford of Marlborough, New Hampshire, Carolyn "Lynn" Stanne and her husband Anthony "Jim" of Plymouth, Elizabeth "Betsy" Newcomb and her husband Ted of Mansfield, Judith "Judy" J. Bragg of Torrington, Connecticut, and John H. Bragg Jr. and his wife Susan of Norfolk, Virginia; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshfield. Interment will be in Amherst at a later date.
