    • Obituary: 21 Aug 1997; GREENFIELD - Ruby M. (Whitaker) North, 85, of 14 Graves Road died Monday at home after a long illness. Her husband, Kenneth North, died in 1990. She leaves her son, Wayne K. North of Leominster; a daughter, Janet E. Rura of Indianapolis; three sisters, Ruth W. Bolton of Hebron, Maine, Eva B. Sedgwick of Winterhaven, Fla., and Elinor Ambo of Porters Corners, N.Y.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was born in Gill, daughter of Charles and Orra May (Hale) Whitaker. She graduated from Powers Institute in Bernardston in 1929 and later did a post-graduate year with the Institute. She also attended Greenfield Commercial School, Bay Path Institute in Springfield, Fitchburg State Teachers College and Greenfield Community College. She was an operator at New England Telephone Co. for 18 years and a teacher in the Gill schools for many years, retiring in 1972. She was a 60-year-plus member of the Bernardston Unitarian Church. She has been the church's organ player, choir director, a Sunday School teacher and a trustee. She was a member of the Sylvan-Rebekah Lodge 87 of Greenfield and an assistant librarian with the Cushman Library from 1925 to 1931. She also was a member of the First United Methodist Bernardston Church of Greenfield and the retired teachers association. She enjoyed playing the organ, both for the church and for herself. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. today at the Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., Greenfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Franklin County, 164 High St., Greenfield 01301, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
