    Other Events and Attributes:

    • History: On 27 December 1956, the family was on their way to visit Gladys' sister for Christmas, when a drunk driver hit them head on. Danny was thrown from the vehicle and killed. Loy's foot went through the floor board trying to break, and he suffered a broken jaw, foot, and other minor injuries. Gladys was the only conscious person after the accident, and crawled up the bank to the road side to flag down help. She had neck and back pain for the rest of her life. Both she and Barbara were originally pronounced dead at the hospital. Rodney had a broken leg. Barbara had a broken jaw and leg. Jimmy had a skin graft performed to his severe head wound. Mary had minor injuries. The family stayed with their grandmother Fisk after the accident while those in the hospital were recovering. None of them were able to attend the funeral of Danny. According to his obituary, Loy learned the value of hard work at an early age during the Depression, as he left school to help his father support their large family. He worked in the shipyards in Washington, built bridges, dams, and highways all over the Midwest and for many years maintained the country roads around Unadilla. Loy and Darlene established Red?s CafĂ©, known for good homecookin? and cold beer. Loy always advised his children, ?There?s always a job out there if you?re willing to work.? He served in the U.S. Army near the end of WWII. In 1948, he came to Syracuse to work on Highway#50 and met Darlene Fisk at Elms Ballroom. They were married on June 19th that year, raising 7 children together. There wasn?t any job or problem he wouldn?t tackle, including checking his children?s homework. Loy loved his family above all else and took great joy in the arrival of each grand and great-grandchild.
