    • Obituary: 25 Feb 2012; Kermit Irving Smith, 64, of 498 Marlboro Road in West Brattleboro, died unexpectedly on Friday, February 24, 2012 at his home. He was born January 20, 1948, the son of Floyd H. and Maxine E. Smith in Brattleboro. Kermit grew up in Vernon and attended the Vernon Elementary School. He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1966. Kermit served as an ordnance mechanic in the U.S. Navy from June 25, 1966 until January 7, 1970. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA 42 off the coast of Vietnam and in the Mediterranean Sea. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Services Medal and the National Defense Medal. Over the years Kermit was employed at W.T. Grant, the Book Press, Redemption Metals, Dummerston School, SEVCA and Mastaler Cleaning Services. In 2008 he retired from HPC (formerly Bridgeport Metal Goods) in Hinsdale, N.H. after 30 years of dedicated service, mostly on the third shift. Kermit was an avid Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and New England Patriots fan and also enjoyed brook-fishing with his daughters. His love of NASCAR took him to races in Loudon, N.H., Dover, Del., and Richmond, Va. He enjoyed attending Colonel football, baseball and basketball games. Each year Kermit looked forward to receiving the newest Archer Mayor book for Christmas. He loved attending live theater, whether on Broadway, at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine, or at the Saxtons River Playhouse. Most recently he enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and co-workers and playing games on Facebook. Kermit is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Patricia Taylor. He was married to his high school sweetheart by Rev. David Garrecht on September 21, 1968 at the Vernon Union Church. He is also survived by two daughters, Kristine M. Smith of Chester, Va. and Karin A. Smith of Brattleboro; his mother, Maxine Smith of Vernon; a brother, Albert Smith and his wife Susan of Easthampton, Mass.; two sisters, Mary Sawin and her husband Jesse of Athol, Mass. and Kathryn Knapp and her husband Richard of Brattleboro; several aunts and uncles; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father on February 6, 1999 and last week by his beloved cat Shadow. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services in celebration of Kermit's life will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Vernon Union Church with Rev. David Garrecht officiating. Burial will take place in Locust Ridge Cemetery in the springtime. Smith, 93, of Huckle Hill Senior Housing, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, April 16, 2015 at Pine Heights Nursing Home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Smith was born in Putney on September 11, 1921 the daughter of Watson and Kathryn (Kingsbury) Magoon. She was raised and educated in Brattleboro attending Brattleboro High School. She had been employed at the Holstein-Friesian Association working as a clerk and retired as a supervisor in 1986 following 23 faithful and dedicated years with the Association. Previously she had worked at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates on Cotton Mill Hill. A woman of strong faith she was a longtime member of Vernon Union Church where she served as a deaconess and member of the church choir. Mrs. Smith enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the former Green Mountain Squares, held membership in the Silver Liners Line Dance Club and was active for many years with the Vernon Seniors. For several years she assisted with the town of Vernon monthly newspaper. Of her other leisure time activities she enjoyed gardening, her flowers, puttering around her former home on Stebbins Road. She especially liked music and never missed the Lawrence Welk Show. She was an avid reader and cherished time spent with her family. On August 1, 1942 in Brattleboro she was married to Floyd Smith. Her faithful and devoted husband of 56 years predeceased her on February 6, 1999. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Sawin and her husband Jesse of Athol, Mass., and Kathryn Knapp and her husband Richard of Brattleboro; two daughters, in-law, Patricia T. Smith of Brattleboro and Susan Smith of Easthampton, Mass.; a sister, Alberta Bellville of Brattleboro; nine grandchildren, Samantha (Rick) Falls, Michael and Melissa Waterman, David, Floyd (Penny) and Kevin (Rhonda) Knapp, Heidi (Sam) Clement, and Kristine and Karin Smith; 15 great-grandchildren, Daniel, Alisia, Ashley, Chelsea, Aaron, Ernie, Travis, Ava, Kiaya, Shana-Beth, Dana, Crystal, Kirstin, Christopher and Tyler; and many great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband in 1999; her sons, Kermit in 2012 and Albert in 2014; her grandson Frank Waterman Jr. in 2013; and siblings, Albert Magoon, Anita Stone, Robert Magoon, and Virginia Taylor. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Vernon Union Church. A reception will follow the services to be held in the downstairs area of the church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Townshend where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. The family wishes to thank Heidi and Sam Clement for their never ending care of her for the past several years, enabling her to live independently.     • Obituary: 28 Feb 2005; RATTLEBORO - Kathryn Kingsbury Magoon, 104, died Feb. 26, 2005, at Eden Park Nursing Home. She is thought to have been Windham County's oldest resident. She was born Dec. 22, 1900, in Chester, the daughter of Arthur and Flossie Kingsbury. She attended schools in Chester. She married Watson Magoon on Dec. 22, 1918. He died in 1930. Mrs. Magoon was employed around Brattleboro for people including Jean Gorsuch and Hildegard Durfee. She enjoyed the annual family reunion, gardening, canning and watching the Reformer Christmas Stocking reach its goal. On the occasion of her 104th birthday in December, Mrs. Magoon received close to 150 greeting cards. Survivors include three daughters, Maxine Smith of Vernon, Alberta Bellville of Brattleboro, Anita Stone of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a sister, Marjorie Putnam of Chester; a brother, Theodore Kingsbury of Thomaston, Conn.; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Magoon was also predeceased by two sons, Albert Magoon and Robert Magoon; two daughters, Virginia Taylor and an infant daughter, Rona Magoon; four brothers, Leonard Kingsbury, Bernard Kingsbury, Francis Kingsbury, Fred Kingsbury; two sisters, Edna Kingsbury and Mildred Fuller. Calling hours will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. prior to the service. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home, 35 Depot Street in Chester. Earle Bishop and John Martens will officiate. A reception will follow at the Andover Community Church.
