• Obituary: 9 Oct 2015; 1925 - 2015 Henry T. Zukowski, 90, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 7th, 2015 at home. He was born in Salem, MA on July 31st, 1925. He was the son of Valerian and Emilia Zukowski, who were both born in Poland and immigrated to the United States in October 1923. He attended Salem schools and graduated from Salem Commercial School in June 1948. He was awarded an Associate of Arts degree in June 1950, a Bachelor of Science in Education in August 1952, and a Master of Education in August 1956, all from Boston University. While in Salem, he was a member of the Polish Falcons, St. Anthony's Society, St. John's Society, Polish Legion of American Veterans, Am Vets of World War II, and VFW Post 1524. Mr. Zukowski's passion was Our Nation. He was a patriot through and through - having served in the United States Marine Corps on Active Duty and in the Reserve from July 1943 until September 1952. After coming to Lee, he became a Life Member of VFW Post 893, assisting with the post's financial matters. Mr. Zukowski's unabashed pride in the Marine Corps inspired many young people from Lee to join one of the US military services upon completing school - to serve and protect Our Nation. Following his retirement from the Lee school system, he also served the federal government - employed as a Bureau of the Census' Field Representative, leaving that position in June 2005. Mr. Zukowski's conviction was educating Lee's youngsters. He first came to Lee in September 1952, when he was appointed to a Lee High School Business / Social Studies teaching position. He served in that capacity until October 1968, when he became the Vice Principal. In September 1985, he was appointed the school's Principal. As a school administrator, he ensured the high school maintained its accreditation standing ensuring Lee's students were recognized by colleges as having received a sound education. In August 1988, he was appointed the Tyringham, Otis, Lee (Union #29) School Superintendent. As Superintendent, he directed the total overhaul of the roof of the Lee High School in 1994 averting the danger of imminent roof collapse and ensuring the safety of the Lee students. He was the driving force for a major school system recapitalization project - planning, budgeting, designing, and building the new Central School, and renovating the high school to accommodate middle school grades, integrate technology, and add a wing to support theater classes. The auditorium in the new wing was officially named the "Henry T Zukowski Performing Arts Center" in his honor in May 2003. Following Mr. Zukowski's retirement from the Superintendencey in November 1999, he continued to be involved in the high school as the golf coach through the Fall 2004 season resulting in a total of 52 years of employment with the Lee school system. While employed with the school system and beyond, he was an ardent supporter of school activities. He served as Lee High School's JV Basketball Coach, Line Football Coach, Head Football Coach and Golf Coach. Even after his coaching days ended, he was a constant presence at school sporting events sitting at the edge of the field or court during football, soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball games. Mr. Zukowski attended every Lee High School graduation ceremony from 1953 to 2015 visibly demonstrating his support for and pride in 62 classes of graduating seniors. Mr. Zukowski's avocation was community service. During his tenure in education he served as the President of the Berkshire County Teacher's Association, Vice President of the County's Principal's Association and Chairman of the Superintendent's Round Table. He served on the Interscholastic Athletic Association's Softball and Golf Committees and while the high school principal was the District G Director to MIAA. He was a member of the Lee Library Committee, the Master Plan and Recreation Committee, the School Building Commission, and for many years served as a director or manager in Lee's Little League or Babe Ruth League. While Director of the Lee Babe Ruth organization, he oversaw Lee's community newspaper recycling effort engaging the members of Lee's Babe Ruth teams in all aspects of the process from collection to regular delivery to the recycling facility in New York earning much needed funds for the teams while increasing awareness of the importance of preserving the earth's ecological system. He was a State Team and Individual Western MA Sectional Golf Championship Tournament Director for many years. He was on the Board of Directors of Greenock Country Club for 39 years overseeing critical improvements to the course such as improving the drainage on the fairways and making the course more challenging for golfers through strategic tree placement, "British" style roughs, and sharper dog leg holes. He was a practicing member of St. Mary's Church in Lee from 1952, serving as an usher for many years. Mr. Zukowski's relaxation was sports both as a participant and a fan. At the age of 54, he became a dedicated long distance runner. For over 13 years, many Lee residents would see Mr. Z out at the crack of dawn on his daily run. In April 1992, at the age of 66, he successfully completed the Boston Marathon. Mr. Zukowski was an avid golfer. His love of the game began when he worked as a caddy at Salem Country Club during his youth. He was always ready to play a round of golf or practice shots. He was a long-time member of Greenock Country Club, and also enjoyed playing rounds at the various courses in and around Berkshire County. He was a devoted Boston Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics fan. He enjoyed the trials and tribulations of his favorite football team the Oakland Raiders. He often could be found at home - watching two or three different sporting events simultaneously. Mr. Zukowski's love was his family. He is survived by his wife Joan Williams Zukowski of Lee, a daughter, Colonel (retired) Laura and her husband, Jeff Martin, a son, Donald and his wife, Kristina Curtis Zukowski, and six granddaughters, Sarah, Rebecca and Cara Martin; Morgan, Emelia, and Sophie Zukowski. He leaves a sister Laura Zukowski Bryson of Salem, MA. FUNERAL NOTICE: Visiting hours will be held at Kelly's Funeral Home in Lee on Sunday, October 11th from 2 to 6p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church in Lee on Monday, October 12th at 11a.m. Cremation will follow.
