      Harding W. "Bud" Whitney, 79 of 92 Wood Pond Road, West Hartford, Conn., died last night at the Buckley Convalescent Home there. A former longtime Pittsfield resident, he was secretary of the Berkshire Woolen Co. corporation for many years and served as clerk of commitment of the City Council under six mayors. Born in Warwick, Mass, Mr. Whitney lived here for 41 years, moving to Hollywood, Fla., after his retirement in 1953. A graduate of Fitchburg Business College, he entered the employ of American Express Co., in Boston in its foreign department, and a short time later, received a government appointment to the Philippine Islands in the service of the Bureau of Posts in Manila. He came to Pittsfield in 1912 and, in the following year, entered the employ of the Berkshire Woolen Co. In 1938, Mr. Whitney became secretary of the corporation and a director. A lifelong Republican, he served intermittently as clerk of the Common Council and the Board of Aldermen under the city's partisan chapter in the 1920s. When the new chapter became effective in 1934, the late Mayor Allen H. Bagg named him clerk of committee of the City Council. He was reappointed annually since that time until his resignation in 1953. During that period, he served under Mayors French, West, Barnes, Bagg, Fallon and Capeless. Mr. Whitney was also active in a number of civic affairs, especially Community Fund drives. He was one of the founders of the Berkshire Hills Country Club and served as its secretary for five years. He was a member of the South Congregational Church and the Mystic Lodge of Masons. After the death of his wife, the former Elise Regnier, in 1966, he moved from Florida to West Hartford to make his home with his son, Robert H. Whitney. Besides his son, Robert, he leaves another son, Kenneth L. Whitney of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Clifford E. of Delmar, N.Y., and eight grandchildren.Friends may call at the Dery Funeral Home tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A Masonic service will be held tonight at 8. Services will be held Saturday morning at 11 at the funeral home. The Rev. Harold C. Criswell of South Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery.
