History Richard graduated in 1934 from Orange High School. During World War II, he was a 2ed Lt. in the Army serving in Germany. According to his obituary, "During the 1930's, Richard purchased ''Hole In The Wall,'' a diner on South Main Street, Orange from Charles Harris and was later joined by his brother, Robert. They purchased a new Worcester Lunch Cart Diner in 1940 and it was located in Central Square, Orange. The diner closed during World War II, while he served in the Army from Oct. 13, 1943 until his honorable discharge as a staff sergeant on March 2, 1946. During his service to his country, he served in the European African Middle Europe theatres, including the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, the diner was reopened and was known as ''Whit's Diner'' and also ran Whitney's Restaurant in Athol for several years. Richard later went to Greenfield where he operated Alwin and Olga's Restaurant on Federal Street, specializing in German cuisine. After selling the Greenfield restaurant, Richard moved to Keene and worked at the C. L. Lane Co. in East Swanzey. Initially a logger for the company, he became shop superintendent in the manufacturing of wooden buckets. He retired in 1981 after 20 years with the company. An avid golfer, Richard was a longtime member of the Bretwood Country Club in Keene. He enjoyed his family, oil painting, rug hooking and sports. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Swanzey."  [1, 2
