Bruce M. Geikie, a chief petty officer attached to North Island Naval Air Station, died June 6 of injuries suffered in a skydiving accident. He was 38.
Mr. Geikie died at Riverside General Hospital, where he was taken after he was injured June 1 in Hemet.
A master test parachutist, Mr. Geikie was assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 8 aboard the aircraft carrier Nimitz.
During his 20-year naval career, he received two Navy Achievement Medals and numerous other citations, including for marksmanship in pistol and rifle shooting.
As a member of the U.S. Parachutist Association, Mr. Geikie had logged 4,795 jumps. He held a Class D expert parachutist license and was a certified tandem instructor, an accelerated free-fall jump master and a senior parachute rigger accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Mr. Geikie was a native of Orange, Mass., where he was a member of American Legion Post 172. He had lived in Fallbrook for the past two years.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Penny; daughter, Samantha Elizabeth Geikie of Fallbrook; his mother, Eleanor Geikie of Orange, Mass.; sisters, Cara Deane of Orange, Mass., and Lisa Jean of Douglasville, Ga.; and brother, Glenn Geikie of Franklin, Mass.
Services were June 12 at North Island Naval Air Station. Donations are suggested to the Samantha Geikie Trust Fund, in care of Valley Merchants Bank, 800 E. Florida St., Hemet, CA 92543.
