Betty-Sue Pratt said of her in 1997, "I remember Grandma as a very tiny lady with hair that was combed into deep waves from her natural curls. Her hair was always dark and she never did have white hair even at the time of her death. She was always thin. In later years, her hands were severely deformed by arthritis. She lived and worked as housekeeper for the Carpenter Family. They were 1st cousins by marriage. Grandma stayed there long enough to raise 3 generations. She was able to maintain an independent life style with the help of her daughter-in law, Mary Ballou, before moving into a Rest Home and then to a Nursing Home in Athol.... She ...once had a catastrophic automobile accident. She was told she would probably never walk as her pelvis was crushed. Grandma did walk, probably out of shear stubbornness, and the only concession she ever made was to sit in a straight chair as it was too difficult to get out of a low one. She did retain a bit of a limp and learned to use a walker the last few years of her life. She was holder of the Boston Post gold headed cane."

    From the Athol Daily News, 6 June 1952, "Cecil Stiles Ballou, 55, owner of the dairy farm and registered Gurnsey herd at 383 East River St. Orange, was burned to death in a flash fire in his barn yesterday afternoon. Ballou was pitching hay from a loft to a tractor-powered bailer on the barn floor, which was being operated by his son, Derrill. The hay toppled over, hurling Ballou onto the bailer and burying him under an estimated 2 tons of hay, which burst into flames from the exhaust and gasoline of the machine."

    She died from broncho-pneumonia brought on by the Spanish flu. Coffins were in such short supply that her brother, Cecil, bought one in Orange, and took it to Salem, riding on it in the baggage car of the train.

He was a member of Company E, 102ed Infantry and while in New Mexico was reviewed by General Pershing. From 3 October 1917 to 3 June 1919, he was with the AEF in France. On 23 July 1918, he was gassed and shell-shocked at Chateau-Thierry. He was discharged 6 June 1919 as a PFC at Camp Lee, Virginia.

    He died at St. Vincent's hospital, Jacksonville, Florida of pneumonia contracted after receiving sever injuries, including a fractured skull, from a motorcycle accident on 27 September 1937 while escorting the Governor of Florida traveling to a meeting.
