He was a cost accountant for Bethlehem Steel at the Fore River shipyard in Quincy and worked in the comptrollers division at the State House in Boston several years before joining the Needham town staff. Mr. Thayer was former baritone soloist at First Parish Church, Unitarian, in Harvard Square, Cambridge, and First Unitarian Church in Dedham, soloist and choir master at St. John's Church in Jamaica Plain, and for 20 years soloist at the First Church of Christ Scientist in Rockland. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was born and educated in Cambridge and lived in Rockland 50 years. He made his home in Hanover and Florida for eight years. He was a graduate of the College of Music at Boston University."
