According to his obituary, "During his fathers last illness he and his wife came here [Barre] to care for him, remaining a considerable period and then returning to Orange. Mr. Harding is favorably remembered by many of our citizens in both his earlier days and when here to care for his father. He was social, companionable, well-informed and well liked."

      Mrs Margaret Ward Stone, 98

      ORANGE - Margaret (Ward) Stone, 98, of 54 Ball St., an active church member, died Friday in Quabbin Valley Healthcare Center, Athol, after an illness. Her husband, Donald H. Stone, died in 1969. She leaves a son, Richard C. Stone of Orange; a daughter, Diane Brodeur of Oxford; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was born in North Orange, daughter of Everett D. and Cora (Harding) Ward, and graduated from Orange High School in 1919. Mrs. Stone worked several years at Minute Tapioca Co. and had also been a bookkeeper at Chamberlain's Hardware. She was a lifelong member of First Universalist Church and served as chairman of the church fairs for many years. She later organized La Petite flower shows at the church and made quilts and braided rugs for various church projects. Past president of the Orange Women's Club, she was instrumental in forming its Garden Club division and was inducted into the Clara Barton Sisterhood of the Universalist-Unitarian Women's Federation in 1979. An accomplished pianist and organist, she was the organist at the Community Church of North Orange and Tully for several years. She was also an avid gardener and was well known in the area for her rock gardens. A private graveside service will be in South Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Universalist Church, Building Fund, 31 North Main St., Orange, MA 01364; or to First Congregational Church, Memorial Fund, 355 Main St., Oxford, MA 01540. Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main St., is directing arrangements.

      Harding W. "Bud" Whitney, 79 of 92 Wood Pond Road, West Hartford, Conn., died last night at the Buckley Convalescent Home there. A former longtime Pittsfield resident, he was secretary of the Berkshire Woolen Co. corporation for many years and served as clerk of commitment of the City Council under six mayors. Born in Warwick, Mass, Mr. Whitney lived here for 41 years, moving to Hollywood, Fla., after his retirement in 1953. A graduate of Fitchburg Business College, he entered the employ of American Express Co., in Boston in its foreign department, and a short time later, received a government appointment to the Philippine Islands in the service of the Bureau of Posts in Manila. He came to Pittsfield in 1912 and, in the following year, entered the employ of the Berkshire Woolen Co. In 1938, Mr. Whitney became secretary of the corporation and a director. A lifelong Republican, he served intermittently as clerk of the Common Council and the Board of Aldermen under the city's partisan chapter in the 1920s. When the new chapter became effective in 1934, the late Mayor Allen H. Bagg named him clerk of committee of the City Council. He was reappointed annually since that time until his resignation in 1953. During that period, he served under Mayors French, West, Barnes, Bagg, Fallon and Capeless. Mr. Whitney was also active in a number of civic affairs, especially Community Fund drives. He was one of the founders of the Berkshire Hills Country Club and served as its secretary for five years. He was a member of the South Congregational Church and the Mystic Lodge of Masons. After the death of his wife, the former Elise Regnier, in 1966, he moved from Florida to West Hartford to make his home with his son, Robert H. Whitney. Besides his son, Robert, he leaves another son, Kenneth L. Whitney of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Clifford E. of Delmar, N.Y., and eight grandchildren.Friends may call at the Dery Funeral Home tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A Masonic service will be held tonight at 8. Services will be held Saturday morning at 11 at the funeral home. The Rev. Harold C. Criswell of South Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery.

      Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Lowell, Mass., she was the daughter of Harry L. Woodman of Massachusetts and Ruth E. Ward of Massachusetts. She grew up in Lowell, graduating from Lowell High School in 1937, and also from the Bradshaw Business School. She moved to North Orange, Mass., in 1941, and lived in Orange for several years. Since 1949, she lived in Pennsylvania. She worked at Montgomery Ward for 22 years, was a member of the Portersville Bible Church and enjoyed puzzles, reading and spending time with her family. Surviving are her husband, John D. Farmer, who she married Aug. 21, 1975; a son, Jeffrey S. Smith and his wife, Sherry, of Butler; a daughter, Jean R. Davis and her husband, Gary, of Slippery Rock; a sister, Shirley Buell of Cabot; stepchildren, Robert Farmer, Elaine Steinheiser and her husband, Dee, of Edinboro, and Joan Phillips and Sandy Sevigny, both of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard H. Smith and Granville W. Cooper; a granddaughter, Tracy Lynette Scarborough; and two stepchildren, Margaret Stroman and John D.     Kathryn M. (French) Johnson, 87, of Ward Road, died peacefully on Saturday, June 27. 2020 at Athol Hospital.

    Born in Orange on February 24, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Harold F. and Grace E. (Ward) French and lived her entire life in Orange. She graduated from Orange High School in 1950.

    Kathryn was married to Phillip G.A. "Gus" Johnson Jr. for 51 years until his death on December 25, 2002.

    Kathryn was a hard worker and assisted her husband in the daily operation of the family farm, as well as working for the Town of Athol Public Works Department office, Tax Collector/ Treasurer for the Town of Orange for 8 years, the former Farren Hospital and the former Minute Tapioca Company.

    An active member of the Community Church of North Orange and Tully, she had worked numerous fairs. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, walking, traveling and doing jig saw puzzles with her life- long friend, Irene. Kathryn had been a member of the North Orange Grange.

    Kathryn is survived by her son, Stephen Johnson and his wife Diane, of Orange; three daughters, Mary Bates and her husband Tom, of Orange, Wanda Kukas and her husband, Andrew, of Barre, and Brenda Anderson and her husband, Paul, of Athol; seven grandchildren, Erica LeBrun (Scott) of New Hampton, NH, Mandy Blackbird (Chad) of Athol, Andrew Bates (Todd) of CT, Joseph Kukas of NH, Gustaf Kukas (Brittany) of Barre, Aaron Carr (Rachel) of PA, Elizabeth Carr of Gardner, Paul Anderson of CT, and Krystal Anderson (James) of Stoneham; great grandchildren, Ryan Gustaf LeBrun, Mia LeBrun, Colby Blackbird, Hunter Kukas, and Harley Kukas.

    Besides her parents and husband, Kathryn was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jacqueline Kukas.

    • Obituary: 16 Sep 2013; NORTH ORANGE- Nancy Fuchs, 74, formerly of Oldwick, NJ and North Orange, MA passed away peacefully September 14, 2013, following a long illness. Nancy was born in Montclair, NJ and graduated from Lansingburg High School in Troy, N.Y. She had a degree in special education from Trenton State College and various certifications from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Nancy served on the Hunterdon County, NJ library commission and was a long term member and past president of the Hunterdon County chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). While her children were growing, she was both a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. Nancy worked at many nursery schools, elementary schools and at the Matheny School/Hospital in Peapack, NJ. She is survived by her husband Gerhard, a brother Alan Ward, a sister Laurie Speanburg, a son Fritz, a son Brian and his wife Sandy, a daughter Rebecca and her partner Kris, a son Joachim, a son Otto and his wife Stacy and grandchildren Edward, Alexander, Scott, Erika, Bailey and, Haley. She is predeceased by her brother Richard and her daughter Christine. There are no calling hours. A funeral will be held at the Community Church of North Orange and Tully, Corner of Main and Creamery Hill, North Orange on Saturday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Don Erickson officiating. Interment will follow in Jones Cemetery, Orange. Per Nancy's wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hunterdon County Library, the Salvation Army or, a favorite charity.
