  Wayne I. Hunter

  Wayne I. Hunter, 73, of 31 Bradford St. died yesterday at Hillcrest Hospital after a long illness. Born in Orange Sept. 17, i913, son of Harvey M. and Margaret Fratus Hunter, he was educated in Orange schools and lived there before moving to Pittsfield 40 years ago. Before his retirement, Mr. Hunter was employed in General Electric Co.'s power transformer department for nine years. Before that he was a foreman at U.S. Gypsum for several years until the company closed. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Senior Citizens. He was the husband of the former Florence Wheeler, to whom he was married 51 years in July. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Joan Wieber of Pittsfield, Mrs. Nathalie Kissel of Shutesbury and Mrs. Thelma Sroka of Groton, Conn., and seven grandchildren. Mr. Hunter's wish was for his body to be donated to Tufts Medical School. There will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at a. later date in Shutesbury. Phyllis was born September 26, 1918 in Athol, MA. She is the daughter of the late Raymond M. and the late May (Skevington) Hunter. She married Howard A. Shaw. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard A. Shaw on May 29, 1996. Phyllis lived in Athol all of her life graduating from Athol High School in 1936. She worked for L.S. Starrett Company for 18 years until her retirement. She had previously worked for Dr. Grossman for two years and Ansin Shoe Shop in the office for seven years. She was a member of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church for many years where she served on every board and committee holding an office on each committee. She also taught Sunday school, served on the board of trustees was a deaconess and a member of the FA-Ho-LA and the I Wonder What Club. She and her husband were members of the Jumptown Twirlers for many years, was a former 4-H leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She also was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed bowling in her younger years. She is survived by one daughter: Sandra M. Engel and her husband Mark of Campbell, CA and two sons: Gordon H. Shaw and his wife Judith of Richmond, VA, Frederick E. Shaw and his wife Bridget of Athol; she also has five grandchildren, Jason Engel, Dana McKinnon, Dean Engel, Abby Willard, Heather Hays; and ten Great Grandchild, Marshall, Madison, Branden, Tyler, Dean, Emilee, Devin, Erin, Angel and Hope. The funeral will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Athol-Orange Baptist Church, 131 Ridge Ave., Athol, MA with Rev. Mark Bariloni officiating. Burial will be private. • Obituary: say 8 Dec 2005; ATHOL - John S. Hunter,76 of 600 Vine St., Athol, died Tuesday, December 6, 2005, in the Athol Memorial Hospital, Athol. He was born in Athol, on March 21, 1929, the son of the late Raymond M. and the late May (Skevington) Hunter. He grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School. Mr. Hunter was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was employed at the Union Twist Drill Company for many years as a miller, he retired in 1985. He previously worked at the Merrifield Dairy. John enjoyed fly fishing, going to the casino and loved sports especially football. He was an avid Red Sox fan. He leaves one sister, Phyllis Shaw of Athol; his close companion, Norma M. Purple of Athol; nieces and nephews, Rita Besseck, Mary Ann Jacobs, Linda Pickett, Pat Miller, Joe Ziguloski, Jane Rice, Fred Shaw, Gordon Shaw and Sandra Engel along with many great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Nellie (Ziguloski) Hunter and by a brother, R. Russell Hunter. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2005, at 2:00 pm in the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 12 - 2 p.m. at the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol.
